VISUAL TEXT

With the new PSLE syllabus for the Visual Text Comprehension component, the format has changed from one visual text with eight questions to two visual texts (Text 1 and Text 2) with only five questions.

Although the number of questions—and consequently, the marks—has been reduced, this does not mean the section is easier to tackle.

From analyzing my P6 son's Visual Text component in his school's weighted assessment, I found that it was not as straightforward as it seems. Answering these questions effectively requires cross-referencing skills, comparison skills, and deeper analytical thinking.

To help students navigate this section, I have developed a study tip that breaks down the key question types:

Mnemonic: "VIP FC" (Very Important PSLE Fact Check!)

VVisual Text Analysis (How do images support the message?)

IInference Questions (What is implied?)

PPurpose Questions (Why was this included?)

FFactual Questions (What is directly stated?)

CComparison Questions (How does this compare with another text?)

This mnemonic links directly to exam strategies, reminding students that "VIP FC" (like a Fact Check) ensures they understand and analyze visual texts properly.

This mnemonic directly aligns with exam strategies, helping students approach visual texts systematically—just like a fact-checking process (VIP FC) to ensure thorough understanding and analysis.

I will be posting more worked examples under my Study Studio soon, so do watch out for that! In the meantime, check out how I analyzed my son’s Visual Text assessment questions below. 🚀📚

Based on the images, the different question types asked in the Visual Text Comprehension section include:

1

Factual/Comprehension Question

  • Example: According to the poster in Text 1, which of the following is true of the shampoo collection?
  • This type of question assesses the ability to extract and recall explicit details from the visual text.

2

Purpose-based Question

  • Example: “Embrace your transformation.” Why did the writer make this statement in Text 1?
  • This question tests the understanding of the persuasive techniques used in advertisements or posters.

3

Inference-based Question

  • Example: The quote from Steph Lim is included in the poster in Text 1 to show that the shampoo collection __.
  • This question requires students to interpret implied meanings behind the use of testimonials.

4

Visual Text Analysis Question

  • Example: “Three unique formulas to offer maximum benefits!” The picture of the shampoo collection supports this by giving the impression that the shampoos __.
  • This tests how visual elements contribute to the meaning of the text.

5

Comparison and Critical Thinking Question

  • Example: According to the poster in Text 1, which of the following is true of the shampoo collection?
  • This type of question assesses the ability to extract and recall explicit details from the visual text.

These questions align with the PSLE English Visual Text Comprehension format, which tests comprehension, inference, and the purpose of visual elements.
