REALITY SHOW ADAPTATION - PART 2
How I Turned a Baking Show Into a PSLE-Worthy Composition — “Showing Determination”
Recently, I watched an episode of Blue Ribbon Baking Championship on Netflix, where one baker faced a series of unfortunate kitchen disasters—cracked bowls, spilled ingredients, lost time—but still came through with a stunning cake and earned the first-place ribbon. That story, filled with resilience and tension, immediately made me think: This is the perfect model for a PSLE composition.
So I used it.
Here is how I turned that moment into a relatable and structured composition idea based on the theme “Showing Determination” and the three-picture writing prompt. Refer below:

Why Reality Shows Make Compositions More Real:
They show real emotions – Viewers see the contestants’ struggles and reactions, which helps students describe emotions realistically.
They’re filled with problems and solutions – Just like a good composition, each challenge unfolds naturally, offering excellent ideas for plot structure.
They inspire resilience – When contestants push through disasters, it reminds young writers that strong characters are the heart of strong stories.
So next time you watch a baking show, talent competition, or obstacle course series—do not just watch for fun. Watch for plot twists, emotions, and real-life determination. Then pick up your pen and turn those moments into meaningful stories.
Because just like Kai (and the baker on screen), sometimes the best stories start with a mess and end with a ribbon.
"She didn’t give up. She showed determination. And she baked her way to first place."

“Don’t forget, you only have 45 minutes!” the announcer’s voice boomed through the hall.
Kai tightened his grip on the whisk as he stood nervously at his cooking station. The bright lights of the hall reflected off the polished countertops, and the chatter of parents and judges filled the air with tension. This was his first junior cooking competition, and he had one goal—to make the best lemon cheesecake he could.
Everything had gone smoothly until disaster struck. As he cracked his third egg into the mixing bowl, he watched in horror as the entire yolk slipped through his fingers and splashed onto the floor. The bowl tipped, sending flour flying into the air like white snow. Gasps erupted from the nearby contestants.
Kai's heart pounded in his chest. He froze for a second, then took a deep breath. “You’ve practised this a dozen times. You can do it,” he reminded himself. Ignoring the flour on his apron and the stares from around him, he quickly wiped the counter and started again, even though precious minutes had been lost.
As the clock ticked down, Kai worked with laser focus. He whisked furiously, folded the mixture gently, and carefully poured it into the cake tin. When he finally slid the cheesecake into the oven, he felt sweat bead on his forehead—not just from the heat, but from the pressure. He had ten minutes left to decorate and plate once it cooled.
When the timer rang, Kai pulled out the cheesecake. It was slightly uneven at the edges, and the top had a tiny crack, but the golden brown colour and sweet citrus aroma gave him hope. With shaky hands, he piped whipped cream along the rim and added a lemon slice in the centre.
He placed his plate on the judging table with seconds to spare.
The judges leaned in, their forks cutting slowly into the soft, creamy layers. “The flavour is amazing,” one of them said. “He met all the criteria.”
Kai’s eyes widened as the head judge walked over, holding a gleaming blue ribbon. “You may not have had the cleanest process,” she said with a smile, “but you showed determination, and that’s what made your dish stand out.”
As the ribbon was pinned to his apron, Kai beamed with pride. The mess, the panic, the pressure—it had all led to this moment. And that was how Kai learned the true meaning of showing determination.
