MASTERING PSLE SCIENCE

THE LIFE AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE BREAKDOWN EVERY STUDENT NEEDS

Are you or your child preparing for the PSLE Science exam?

Then you’ll want to understand how the Science syllabus is divided — not just by topic, but by how those topics shape the way we understand the world. Let’s break it down into two key branches: Physical Science and Life Science.

This simple overview will help clarify what students need to know, how topics are interlinked, and where to focus revision efforts for success!

What is Physical Science in PSLE?

Physical Science covers the non-living components of our world — from the way light travels to how materials conduct electricity. It forms the foundation of how we understand forces, energy, and the behavior of matter.

✳️ Topics Under Physical Science:

  • Diversity of Materials: Why is plastic used for containers? What makes metal different from wood?
  • Water Cycle: Learn how evaporation, condensation and precipitation are part of Earth's natural recycling system.
  • Electrical Systems: Understand how simple circuits work and how conductors and insulators function.
  • Forces: Explore gravity, magnetism, and friction, and how they affect movement.
  • Forms of Energy: Light, heat, sound, and how energy changes form.
  • Heat and Temperature: How heat is transferred and why metals feel colder than plastic.
  • Light and Shadows: Discover reflection, refraction, and the secrets behind shadow size.
  • Photosynthesis: Where physical and life sciences meet — light energy fueling plant life.

What is Life Science in PSLE?

Life Science focuses on living things — how they grow, survive, and interact. It encourages students to observe patterns in nature and understand how life is sustained on Earth.

✳️ Topics Under Life Science:

  • Diversity of Living Things: How are animals and plants grouped? What makes fungi different?
  • Life Cycles: From caterpillar to butterfly, from seed to tree — the process of growth and change.
  • Reproduction: How living things multiply, both sexually and asexually.
  • Plant Transport System: The xylem and phloem — nature’s pipeline!
  • Human Systems: Learn how the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems keep us alive and healthy.
  • Man and the Environment: Understand food chains, ecosystems, and conservation.
  • Adaptations: Why do camels have humps? Why do polar bears have thick fur?

⭐ Where the Two Sciences Intersect

Some topics, like Photosynthesis, beautifully blend both science domains. While it involves energy from light (physical), it also explains how plants use it to make food (life).

This interdisciplinary nature is why students must not study topics in isolation — making connections between concepts boosts understanding and improves application in open-ended questions.

🧠 Why This Breakdown Matters

Understanding how the syllabus is organised into Physical and Life Science:

  • Helps students categorise concepts more clearly.
  • Makes revision more targeted.
  • Builds awareness of how different science topics relate in the real world — crucial for higher-order thinking.

Tips for PSLE Science Success

Understand, Don't Memorize

Grasp the concepts to apply knowledge effectively.

Use Visual Aids

Diagrams and charts can help in understanding complex processes.

Practice Open-Ended Questions: Develop the ability to explain concepts clearly.

Relate to Real Life

Connect topics to everyday experiences for better retention.
