HOW TO ACE THE PSLE ENGLISH LISTENING COMPREHENSION

🎧 PLEASE Listen Carefully: How to Ace the PSLE English Listening Comprehension

When it comes to PSLE English, one component that often gets overlooked is the Listening Comprehension paper. While it may seem “easy” because you just have to listen and choose the correct answers, the truth is — it’s a test of concentration, strategy, and recall. One missed word or moment of distraction can cost you valuable marks.

That’s why I’ve created the “PLEASE” strategy — a friendly and effective way to remember what to do before, during, and after the passage is played.

What Does PLEASE Stand For?

P – Preview the Questions

Before the recording begins, students are given time to scan through the questions. Use this wisely!

📌 Tip: Look out for question types like who, what, when, where, and why. This helps you anticipate what to listen for during the reading.

L – Listen to the First Reading

The passage is read aloud twice — but that first reading is crucial.

📌 Tip: Stay fully focused and avoid daydreaming. Jot mental notes or keywords as you listen.

E – Engage Active Recall

After the first reading, the questions are read aloud. This is your chance to test how much you remember.

📌 Tip: Match what you hear in the question to what you recall from the passage. Eliminate obviously wrong answers.

A – Annotate Options in Questions

Don’t just listen passively. Use your question paper to circle, tick, or cross out options based on what you know.

📌 Tip: Narrow down your options. If unsure, mark the question for review during the second reading.

S – Second Chance to Listen and Check

The passage is read aloud a second time. This is your golden opportunity to confirm your answers and catch anything you missed.

📌 Tip: Listen out specifically for the questions you were unsure of.

E – Ensure All Options Are Shaded in the OAS

After the audio ends, time is given for shading your final answers on the Optical Answer Sheet (OAS).

📌 Tip: Double-check that you have shaded the correct circles. No blanks!

Final Advice for Students

Practise under exam conditions.

Use sample recordings and time yourself.

Train your ear.

Train your ear. Listen to spoken English content like news clips, podcasts, or storytelling videos in Standard Singapore English.

Stay calm.

Stay calm. Anxiety affects focus. Breathe and trust your preparation.

The PSLE Listening Comprehension isn’t just about hearing — it’s about processing, thinking, and applying. So PLEASE listen carefully and use this mnemonic to guide you through every step of the test.
