PSLE English Finale (Last Lap)

PSLE ENGLISH FINALE (THE LAST LAP)

Shirleen

Tan

Founder of Sowing Seedz

The two main leads for this course are the C & C – Composition Writing and Comprehension Open-ended. You can say they are double trouble for most of my students (perhaps your children included). There are two parts to this course to address the Achilles' heels of many parents.

FIRST PART: Compo Writing

1) I will be using my GROW Your Writing Skills materials. Click on the link to read more.https://sowingseedz.com/portfolio/grow-your-writing-skills/. The most common gripe from many parents is the pain point of getting their children to write. I usually assess my students first before suggesting methods, and many a time, most students lack the first defense of writing – planning/brainstorming. They just skim through the question, whack a storyline (maybe this part is skipped), and start writing (lacking ideas thereof). In this scenario, one cannot expect their compo grades to be decent. Thus, I will be sharing a deeper analysis of how to make your child's story engaging from start to end. A sample is attached.

2) Story Plot Flow

Again, there are many frameworks detailing and teaching students how to plot their stories. To me, any forms work, as long as students take the first step to do a proper brainstorming. I too, have a few frameworks up my sleeve, but for this course, my pick is the most basic and simple one that I have used for my students, and by far, the most effective piece. I call it the Story Plot Flow, which helps students to formulate a story in double quick time. Thus, in my course, I will be guiding your children to brainstorm as many story plot flows as possible.

One of my P6 students was frustrated as he was always faulted for having missing plot developments which pulled his contents down. When he came to see me, I noted that his writing flair is quite good, just that he lacked proper planning, which was why some parts of his compo pieces did not make sense. After aligning his thoughts with mine, he is enlightened and writes better than before.

It is with the highest accolade that his effort is recognized by his school teacher, and was even picked as a sample compo for his school's!

3) Story Openings/Endings

Somehow, using flashbacks is a popular option for almost 90% of my students. I am not against using that, but if a child is capable of using other options to write, why not? On a case-by-case basis, I will assess whether a child can be stretched. If so, I will encourage other forms of writing to challenge their writing capacities. There are notes on different kinds of story openings and endings, so do encourage your child to try!

4) Kahoots!

I will be using Kahoots! to interest and engage them, so will require parents to have an additional device and prepare the application. It is a free download. Below is an example. For parents who are familiar with Kahoots!, this platform is effective to test your child while playing. I will be sharing different types of descriptive phrases – idioms, metaphors, similes, etc. This is to help them remember subconsciously, and start using the above naturally in their composition writing.

SECOND PART

5) Comprehension Open Ended

No frills here. This portion is just pure, plain hands-on work. This section of the English paper 2 is also voted the least favorite component by my previous, current, and I dare say future students. However, if one grasps the essence of the answering techniques, it is also possible to score and do well! Using my Compre Open-Ended Flow (again), yes, I use the word 'flow', as that is truly the basis of good study habits.

Attached is a sample of my student's work, using my above framework. I will be using past years' papers for practice. Do expect lots of annotations and markings. My teacher used to say constructive mess is good for the brains to capture learning points. I believe my teacher, and now I am imparting this value to the next generation.

PSLE Science Finale (Last Lap)

PSLE SCIENCE FINALE

Primary Science is no walk in the park for most of my students. Yes, I am able to engage them in experimental hands on and other interesting materials, but the crunch and final nail is dependent on the end of their P6 journey, the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE). With this in mind, students, by now, should be equipped with the necessary skills to help them tackle most Science questions accumulated since Primary 3.

Thus, in my course, I will be touching on specific skills and drills to align my students to attempt the Science questions confidently. There are many teaching methods, framework (from schools, tuition centres, including mine) out there. I always tell my students, be open minded and learn all the skills taught, and find one that suits you the most. How to tell? By the results. That is, real life experimenting and analyzing data.

To give a quick example: highlighting important contextual clues. I did an actual 'experiment'. I allowed my students to complete one set of exam paper without highlights, and one with. We marked and graded in class. As a result, my students were able to witness for themselves the difference at the end of the day. They were convinced and more willing to work towards a better grade. Thus, without further ado, let me run through my course outline.

In this module, I will be using my R.I.S.E.N framework. There are many others out there. Most schools use C.E.R (claim, evidence, reason) for example. It does not matter which your child chooses to use, because, at the end of the day, most framework skills emphasize on key answers.

I will be showing how RISEN can be be used to apply in all of the Science questions. There is no trick nor gimmick. The catch is your child needs to be able to apply the framework appropriately to see results. Below are some extracts to have an idea.

a) This is part of the lesson notes, just to briefly show the students what to look out for and not lose marks carelessly.

3) I will be using my curated book series: Science Q&A Study Notes (Lower Block & Upper Block) to run through questions in class. More samples can be viewed here:

Q&A Study Notes (PSLE VERSION)

4) Science Checklist Analysis:

This is useful if you have no idea how to help your child identify his/her topic weakness/es. This sheet gives a helicopter view at a glance. I will also touch on this.

NOTE: I will reinforce the CLTs: ie, under Interactions, Living Together, Food chains/webs and adaptations are removed.

5) Last and final note, for this Course, expect minimal or no homework, as time is already very tight and limited, and your child is very stretched. I believe in paced learning, and learning should be fun and enjoyable to see maximized results. Thus, for the lessons, I will be using my book, and focusing the important aspects they should take note of, do some seat work over class, and that is it. They are just to revise and apply what they have learnt in school, tuition or independent work. I will of course, follow up with messages to keep track. However, it is compulsory for them to annotate and make notes whilst the lessons are ongoing. I will periodically check on their work.

For my first lesson, I will do a short quiz on all the topics tested (p3-6), so that your child knows the pitfalls and reinforce. I will be using Kahoots! to interest and engage them, so will require parents to have an additional device and prepare the application. It is a free download. Below is an example. For parents who are familiar with Kahoots!, this platform is effective to test your child while playing.

SBC Oral (10 Weeks Course)

SBC ORAL

I believe many students are faced with the same difficulties tackling the Stimulus Based Conversation (SBC). Lack of practice, lack of ideas, and lack of 'what to say', are echoed by many of my parents and students alike. I am not going to lie that SBC is easy to score, but it IS possible to breeze through this section.

The screenshots attached below are from two of my current Primary 6 students, each from a different school. With the skills taught, and a slight shift in the angle of conversation, I let their marks do the talking.

With the Covid situation and the move to shift lessons online, I am not holding any physical classes over the June holidays, which I normally will do. Thus, I am coming up with a 10 week SBC course online instead.

Module Outline:

In this module, I will be touching on the P.E.G framework, and how each letter helps your children gain more confidence and momentum.

2) I will cover at least 2 different SBC topics (compiled from previous years' prelim and actual PSLE questions). Below is a sample of a Teacher's Copy.

Interest To Register:

As SBC Oral is very interactive and hands on, with maximum engagement with my students, I am keeping this course to a maximum of 10 participants only. This ensures there is sufficient time to have a 'round robin' discussion, space for each student to absorb and apply what they have learnt, and ample 'air time' for the participants to engage with me. In this case for my objective, it is “Practice Makes Perfect”!

Course Duration: 10 Saturdays, 9-10am

June: 5, 12, 19, 26

July: 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

August: 7

Course fees: $300 per participant (strictly limited for 10 pax only) You save 50% off my usual rate.

Terms & Conditions:

As this course is specially designed for students who are really focused and motivated to learn more about SBC, and want to have a breakthrough in their scores, please consider the above dates, and ensure your child is able to attend ALL sessions before signing up. There will be no make up classes, and no refund of lessons. Recorded videos are subjective to changes, due to the PDDA law. Even if recorded videos are released, they will not be the full duration in case there are any sensitive remarks or unnecessary comments made by the participants. I will make the final decision and discretion. In any case your child is unwell or unable to attend, I may make exceptions to correspond via short calls, email or WhatsApp messages. More details will be added later.

Payment Details & How To Secure your slot:

Download the materials in the folder (students handouts labelled according to the lessons).

Print them out to prepare for your children.

For checking of your children's answers, please assist to upload in the shared folder and I will mark accordingly.

A sample guide will be uploaded in the shared Google folder after every lesson. This is to expedite your children's learning progress.

Please allow up to 3 working days (unless otherwise stated) for the marking of worksheets and sample guide uploads.

OR

Number 2: WhatsApp Chat

A broadcast list will be created, NOT a chat group for PDDA reasons.

PDF files will be then be dropped directly to your personal mobile number via broadcast.

Print them out to prepare for your children.

For checking of your children's answers, please assist to take snap shots and PDF the files to me, and I will mark accordingly. The files will then be sent back to you personal mobile, and not via the broadcast.

Please allow up to 3 working days (unless otherwise stated) for the marking of worksheets and sample guide uploads.

I will decide and confirm the platform to use once the workshop registration is closed.

For the first lesson, there is no need to do any work, but encourage your children to read through the materials to get ready. From the second lesson onwards, I will require your children to prepare the questions inside my handouts, so discussions can be swift and prompt. As this is an interactive course, students are expected to prepare their work before lesson commences.

Reboot Holiday programme 2020 & Regular classes 2021

Reboot Holiday Programme 2020 | Regular Classes 2021

2020 is the year of adapting to multiple changes within a short span, forcing every one of his comfort zone. It is also a time where most students struggle to keep up with the school's syllabus and their exam results have dipped. We do not blame them, we tell our parents, as they have missed out certain milestones in their academic year. Parents understand, and with that, even more so, our parents request for holiday programmes, regular lessons or anything to help their children stay on track.

Thus, we came up with two different initiatives. One is the Reboot Holiday Programme 2020, and the other will be our Regular Classes 2021. Below will be a short description of the programmes.

The circle indicates the Regular Classes 2021. The cute icon refers to the Reboot Holiday Programme 2020. The images are quite self explanatory. Regular Classes 2021 starts first, and more details on the classes will be reverted for parents who are keen to register their children in.

Let us talk about the Reboot Holiday Programme 2020 first. There are 5 sessions for both English and Science in this programme. Parents are encouraged to register for the full 5 lessons, in order for their children to grasp the contents and skills required for each subject. However, there is no hard and fast rule. Should any of you desire to try out one lesson before deciding, we leave this option open, just check against the 2 calendar images attached above. Drop us a message on the full rates, as we do give a little discount for siblings and referrals, and other any enquiries.

As for the Regular Classes 2021, we will be giving a little head start on what to expect for the following year. Regular classes will NOT BE the same as the holiday programme, as the lesson structure and coverage is different.

Below is a skimmed summary:

Look at the calendar schedule..

The circled dates are our Regular Classes 2021.

The dates with the cute icons are our Reboot Holiday Programme 2020.

Check against the dates you are available for either programmes.

For Regular Classes 2021, please give us a message to discuss the dates/timing.

For Reboot Holiday Programme 2020, choose the timing/subject(s) available in 1.5h blocks.

One lesson full rate.

5 lessons 5% off total.

10 lessons 15% off total.

PM us to enquire on siblings/ referral incentives.

Q&A below

Q1: WHY group the different ages together?

A1: A common logistic issue for parents with more than a child. Some parents have asked the possibility of rooming their children together due to logistics reasons. So here we are to help lighten their load. Hence, a modular programme is birthed just for that. We find it hard to specify the classes/time/subjects/levels like our regular classes as the holiday period is such that we need our own respite and time off, thus a free and easy booking of slots is the most viable option. Also, many parents are unwilling to commit to weekly lessons due to holiday plans too. Thus, this model suits the needs of everyone!

Q2: HOW will this be effective since some ages are quite far apart?

A2: Learning is definitely still possible, as the activities done at the beginning of every lesson is packed with hands on activities. The later part will then ease into a differentiated setting, where different age groups will complete tasks according to their levels. As the class size per slot is small, we are able to ensure your child is engaged in their work throughout. It is also healthy to mix different ages together occasionally to sharpen their interpersonal skills, a platform where students also mingle and co-operate with one another.

Q3: WHAT lessons are covered? Will the topics be repeated?

A3: We do not repeat lessons and activities done, except on the same days. For example, Activity A (English) will be repeated on 1030am, 230pm, 530pm slots on Monday. Activity B (Science) will be repeated on 9am, 1pm, 4pm slots on Monday. Both Activities A and B will not be repeated on other dates anymore. Thus, be assured of the different activities crafted out daily.

Q4: WHAT programmes are available?

A4: For English, we focus on the writing aspects. Looking at the MOE guidelines, more emphasis has been placed in oral and written skills, and with the limited exposure students get to write in schools, we are here to plug in the gap and support. Writing is a life long commitment, and with this objective, we believe in setting the foundation right from the start. Click on the short clip attached.

For Science, we like to engage our students to start loving the subject as young as possible. Although Science is taught from Primary Three, most kindergartens do start exposing their charges to simple Science experiments. So we thought, why not us too? Ignite their spatial awareness to have a deeper foundation. Click on the short clip attached.

Q5: HOW about payment / rules & regulations?

A5:

– choice to select and choose the dates and time available, according to your schedule.

– a minimum of 3 pax is needed to start.

– parents who like to have a trial class pays the full rate.

– payment to be made prior to lessons once slots are confirmed.

– there is no refund except case to case basis.

– materials and snacks are provided.

Please drop us a PM at 91287376 for rates, discounts and incentives.

Forces (Interactions)

Forces (Interactions)

Somehow, my favourite topics are found in P6, especially Interaction and Energy. These topics tie in very much to everyday life and are so much easier to remember, if your child is able to link what they do daily into what has been taught.

Thus, this post also makes use of an object to teach forces.

Step 1:

*ADULT: get 2 similar toy cars (to ensure a fair test).

*CHILD & ADULT: both get a car each and place the cars at a distance but same “lane”. At the count of 3, both of you use some strength to push the cars till they collide.

Step 2:

*OBSERVE: watch how the cars “collide” into each other.

You vary the litmus tests, ie, what happens when more force is used, what happens when lesser force is used and so on.

Step 3:

*LINK: Prior knowledge is needed.

– what is a force

– push, pull

– effects of forces (change shape, change direction, etc)

*CHILD: guide child to think what has taken place after the cars are collided.

*EXTENSION: replace one of the cars to a bigger model.

Get your child to observe and predict.

What happened to both the vehicles when same forces are applied?

Energy Changes Part 2

Energy Changes

Part 2

Another favourite activity. My students get curious and excited when they see a bull’s eye target and rubber bands. Another game? Oh yes! Play first, teach later? Another yes!

Boys and girls alike, they like it when there is an outlet to “shoot” rubber bands. Tried and tested with different batches yearly and the results are consistent.

Step 1:

*ADULT: help to draw or print a target board and paste on a wall.

Step 2

*CHILD: takes a rubber band. Either using hands or a ruler, he/she aims at the target and shoot. Distance between the child and the target varies.

*OBSERVE: where and how the rubber band hit.

Step 3:

*LINK: Prior knowledge is needed.

Chemical Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy

Gravitational Potential Energy

Heat Energy

Sound Energy

*CHILD: guide child to think what energy changes has taken place as he/she aims and throws the paper aeroplane.

To test for final understanding, always encourage them to draw a concept map.

Water Cycle

Water Cycle

Children, especially boys, are inquisitive and curious beings by nature. They love to explore the known (prior knowledge) and the unknown (knowledge taught later). Exposing your children to Science education helps to bridge the gap and teaches them valuable life skills; like observation, communication, analyzing and reporting. These skills allow children to deal and adapt with life when they are in the real world.

This is a simple yet effective experiment that helps your child observe the water cycle pattern.

Materials: An empty glass jar, a kettle/jug of hot water, a piece of clingwrap (enough to cover the mouth of the jar)

Step 1:

*ADULT: help to pour some hot water directly into the cool jar.

*CHILD: help to quickly cover the mouth of the jar with the clingwrap. Make sure there are no gaps. Be careful not to touch the body of the jar.

Step 2:

*OBSERVE: almost immediately, you will notice that the inner surface of the clingwrap gets “cloudy”.

Step 3:

*OBSERVE: again, after the jar has cooled down. (30 min – an hour)

*CHILD: gently tap on the surface of the clingwrap.

*OBSERVE: tiny water droplets formed on the inner surface of the clingwrap.

Step 4:

*LINK:

– water from the hot water acts like the Sun’s heat.

– Evaporation (heat gains) occurs.

– Condensation (heat loss) occurs when it comes into contact with the cooler inner surface area of the clingwrap.

– water droplets (clouds) are formed.

– Clouds fall as rain (Precipitation) when they are unable to contain the water droplets.

– The cycle continues.

Step 5:

*MIND MAP:

– It is useful for students to draw out a mind map to link details so they can remember better.

Love my student’s concept mapping. Although it is not perfect, it tells me the effort put in.
