Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Oobleck)

Cycles – States Of Matter

We love to curate experiments that took up our students’ time, not to waste it, but to teach them to be engaged effectively in a new dimension. Textbook learning is here to stay, and we do encourage our students to read and learn from notes. However, the missing link to help them bridge their learning is being hands on. Hence, we always like to showcase a tried and tested experiment on the Oobleck. It is a non Newtonian fluid, and is able to be in the solid state and the liquid state, under certain conditions. They, never get tired of it. It is a good stress reliever too, as some of our students attested to.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Candle Cone)

Cycles – States Of Matter

The experiment tagged to the lesson was fast and furious, and our students could not get enough fun out of it. We repeated the experiment several times, and they still could not get enough of it. We had to spoil their fun and promised another run sometime later over their regular lessons. Safety is our top priority, and before any experiments, we would run a full test out on our own, to ensure the experiments achieved what we had planned. No fire was out of control on that day, as our students were more interested to put out the flames in a quickest time possible instead!

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programe – Science (Sound)

Cycles – States Of Matter

Sound is not a matter, and we aim to use this lesson to teach all about sound waves. We explored why sound is not a matter, and how important is sound in our daily lives. The experiment was the part our students enjoyed – an old school way of speaking into the cups and hoping the other party heard them.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Skeletons & Muscles)

Systems – Muscular & Skeletal

These both systems play a crucial part in ensuring our bodies do not give way – halfway. Each system is equally important and that was what our students got to explore for that day. We supplemented with notes and hands on engagement for them to think, link and make the appropriate connections.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Magnets)

Interactions – Magnets

Magnets are used in our daily lives, and we are very dependent on magnets in terms of technology. Magnets come in different shapes and sizes, and we have the opportunity to showcase the diversity of the magnets. We also challenge them to think does size matters when it comes to the strength of magnetism. Is being big always the winner? We got them to explore by doing the experiments themselves.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Growing Seeds)

Diversity – Plants

Cycles – Life Cycle (Plant)

Systems – Plant Reproduction

One experiment, multiple topics to learn from. A simple act of growing seeds, one can expect to learn about plant diversity, plant life cycle and plant reproduction. However, this is limited to the our P5-P6 students, as they would have already learnt the topics.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Solar Windmill)

Energy – Energy Changes

Blow wind blow! Children learn best when they are able to connect what they have seen to what they will learn. The missing link is the engagement. Once our students observed the power of how energy can be transferred from one form to another, they are “blown away”.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Electricity)

Systems – Electricity

It was an eureka moment for our students when they witnessed how cool electricity could be! They scrambled to lay hands on the globe to create electrical waves. We allowed them to tinker around some more before moving to the lesson proper. We believe in getting our students engaged in activities before teaching them the know hows. This facilitates our lessons even better, where their curious minds are on a high alert to know more.

Nov-Dec 2019 Holiday Programme – Science (Digestive System)

Systems – Digestive System

Burrp! We got our students to taste some mouth watering snacks as we touched on the Digestive System. Learning Science is hands on, where we encourage students to explore learning using their five senses. They touched the snacks, opened the snacks, smelt the snacks, tasted the snacks and swallowed them all! As they were in the motion, we took the opportunity to teach the parts and functions of the digestive system. Learn on the go! Next, they also got the chance to touch a life sized parts of the digestive system. We made it a challenge for them to “dissect” the parts and assemble them again within a time limit. To ensure our students understand what they are learning, we got them to make observations and record in their task sheet.
