P5 Science / 19 Dec Wednesday 2018/ Water Cycles

We have started our P5 Science classes. Science is a tricky subject to teach, where now most schools touch on different topics concurrently. We decided on Water Cycle, as this  topic is like a bridge to what our students have learnt in P4 – States Of Matter. It is something light for them to handle too.

Excited again, our class could not wait to get their hands on the experiment! But first, we got to lay down some rules to manage their expectations and did some lesson delivery.

Hands on time! After making sure they had what we wanted them to complete, we gave them time to create and set up their own experiment – to draw the water cycle on the ziplock bags.

Once done, they helped one another to drip the green coloured water to indicate the levels of their water cycles before they started to observe. We helped to neaten up their final products.

We taught the class how to set up their water cycle bags where they could observe over the week and got them to do some seat work before lesson ended.

This was the result over the week, where their mummies sent me their virtual homework. Aside the incorrect spelling which we highlighted to the parents, their experiment was a success!

Class 3 / 13 Dec 2018 Thursday / Electromagnets

Class 3 – Science Dec Prog 2018

Last lesson for our Dec Symposium, but our boys are still hyped up right from the beginning.

Slide1

The best is always saved for the last, and the boys’ eyes lit up to see the last Science pack before them. After the usual lesson delivery and note taking, they were ready to experiment with their mini electromagnet Science pack.

The assembling took some time and we guided them. They were able to connect the simple circuit after a few rounds of tries. To observe that the iron nail attracted the paper clips when magnetized was an eureka moment for them, as what they see from pen and paper work VS what they actually experience, is different. That is what set us apart. We love to source for suitable materials (safety is our priority and we always brief safety rules to our students) to aid our students to connect the dots for Science.

Class 3 / 12 Dec 2018 Wednesday / Respiratory System

Class 3 – Science Dec Prog

A simple lesson on the Respiratory System. The boys learn the basics of the parts of the Respiratory System, as well as simple functions of what happens to the lungs when the exchange of gases take place. From there, they observed, experimented and recorded their findings.

Watch how “their lungs” work!

Class 1 / 13 Dec 2018 Thursday / Reindeer Craft Writing

Class 1 – English & Math Dec Prog 2018

Jingle bells! What comes to your mind? Christmas is coming! What a better way to end our Class 1 lesson with a Christmas-y theme – Reindeer cookies!

We wished we could have recorded what they sang over the craft. It was jingle-ly fun! Our lovelies were really in the mood for fun and laughter, food and more food! They were really famished at the end and we allowed them a short time to snack. Short it was, as the snacks were gobbled up within minutes.

Settling down to complete their last writing, the class came up with a fantasy world of a Santa, a reindeer, a sleigh and many presents!

Before class ended, M shyly passed us her appreciation drawing to our founder. We were so touched! It was a sweet gesture from her! We treasure such moments when we make a child happy in learning!

Class 3 / 11 Dec 2018 Tuesday / Materials

Class 3 – Science Dec Prog 2018

Learning Science does not need to be difficult at all! With just a few simple and suitable learning tools, many of our students are more confident to tackle the dreaded process skills questions.

In this short video, we explored a P3 topic on Materials. Using different materials to make a robot and the boys enjoyed assembling the robot parts. We upped the challenge by testing whose robot could withstand a strong wind blown at their robots.

Watch out for the BONUS section at the end, where a self-made video was done brilliantly by one of our boys. We were impressed!

Class 1 / 12 Dec 2018 Wednesday / Finger Painting

Class 1 – English & Math Dec Prog

Another way to ignite a student’s senses is by painting. We did a few lessons on painting the previous week using bubble wrap and vegetable stalks. Today, the class used their finger prints as part of the learning.

For a start, we got them to sketch out their own interpretation of how they like their dandelions to be like, and test paint them first, leaving the actual template for later.

They definitely did not disappoint. In fact, they were very creative in completing their artwork.

Whilst waiting for the paint to dry, our students washed their hands and did some writing before completing the actual template. Awesome work we had there. Budding artists in the making!

Not forgetting our students came up with their story line themselves. We are proud of their effort!

Class 1 / 11 Dec 2018 Tuesday / Oreo Milkshake

Class 1 – English & Math Dec Prog

Oreo Milkshake! What can go wrong with this combination? Our poster boy’s wide and anticipating smile says it all. He even helped prepare the materials and ingredients. Seems well trained by our founder.

The class cheered when they knew about the lesson’s craft activity for today, but moaned when they saw how “big” their cups were. Though this was the highlight, we had to control what goes in our students’ tummies too. We are parents, and we know how to limit their sugar intake as well.

We set rules and hygiene standards before getting our students to do. To say they were excited was an understatement. Words could not describe their noise level at that point of time.

Mini Oreo Milkshake cups ready to be served! They were co-operative to pose their happy faces before slurping down their hard work. Cheers!

With the short happy slurp time and tummies filled, they were more than willing to write out their stories. Somehow, the sweet stuff gave them momentarily strength to complete their work!

Class 3 / 10 Dec 2018 Monday / Light

Class 3 –  Science Dec Prog

Our Science lessons always allow us to see the other side of our students, be it our current ones or those who have just joined us. It is proven that children learn better when their hands, minds and hearts are occupied meaningfully. (at least here at Sowing Seedz =p) It is a pity that most schools do not carve out much time for Science lessons, and many students dread attending Science as they are unable to THINK & LINK what they see to how they write. At Sowing Seedz, we do what we can to bridge the gap.

This lesson is on Light, and we always aim to have some teaching before hands on. Unfortunately, our large television screen became faulty and our students had to squeeze to view via a laptop, but that did not stop their interest.

Slide1

We love to see in the eyes and hearts of how our students create their own mind maps. Although it was guided, we could see still traces of their own interpretation.

We gave them time to explore their Science Pack – Light, after going through the aims and objectives of this lesson.

Slide7

We love our Science Packs series, as these are pre packed and can be used at any point of time. Our students respond positively too. After tinkering, they had to fill in their Investigative Task worksheets as part of the lesson too, this is important, as we believe in recording any observations or thoughts related to the experiment, to aid our students to THINK & LINK concepts, a much needed skill to answer process skills based questions.

10 Dec 2018 / Class 2 Monday / Writing

Class 2 – English Writing

Creative writing is a bane to many students, and not many are able to write well. To be honest, learning to write takes a whole load of effort and time, and it is best to start from young. When I was teaching in schools, I looked forward to the Silent Reading period during assemblies, to see most students immersed in their world of reading.

Consistency in writing is the key, and this area is something we do not brag to parents that their children can score well for the first few lessons. We do brag, that however, their children will enjoy writing slowly and surely under a period of time, depending on their willingness to put in the effort.

For our writing class, we like to incorporate colourful picture cards to stimulate their senses. To start writing, one needs to visualise and brainstorm for ideas. After which, we will get them to create mini stories according to the lesson’s themes and present to us for feedback. This helps in their Oral skills as well.

We provide many different templates to aid our students to brainstorm story ideas. This mindmapping also helps them to be aligned to their story lines lest they write out of point.

Slide1

Simple mind mapping skills, but filled with their own creativity and imagination (within reality). That, is the first step to writing well.
