P4 Science/30 July 2018/Monday – digestion

We actually wanted to get a clearer gas drink for the experiment, but could not manage to find one on time, so we settled for the darker one. Before we proceeded, we got our girls to recap what happened when digestion begins in the mouth.

Slide1

After their explanation of the digestion process, we proceeded to carry out the experiment. We ensured they were clear on the aims and objectives before the hands on.

After the experiment, we drew a procedural summary of what was done and linked the concepts they had learnt.

Slide7

This leads to better understanding of getting them to THINK & LINK what they have learnt to what they have done, which they recorded in their Scrapbook.

Slide8

We taped the experiment on the board for later observation and got our girls to make a final observation before class ended.

P4 English/30 July 2018/Monday

This class has been pairing to brainstorm story ideas. We challenged them to think of their own stories for today’s lesson. With much difficulties, they did manage, although there is still a lot of room for improvement. We helped our students refine their ideas till they are acceptable for us.

They drew out their brainstorming after their ideas were accepted and presented them to one another.

Although their stories were presented, we still asked questions to our students for them to think on their feet. Some questions we asked were how to add descriptive phrases into their stories to make them more interesting.

P2 English/27 July 2018/Friday

This was a first lesson for S and he was new to our lesson delivery. He was unsure of our alternate craft writing instead of the usual English lessons. He picked up quickly and eased himself midway of our lesson.

He could really talk, and he could really write. Still unpolished in his writing, but he has a long way to go, so we are not concerned yet. He has the potential to grow even further, like a potter and the clay. We aim to shape S into a budding young writer!

We were taken aback when S told us he needed more sheets of paper to write on! For our P1-P2, usually 1-2 sides of a writing paper suffice, but we are glad S’s burning desire to write started on the first lesson!

P3-P4 Science/26 July 2018/Thursday – light & magnets

This week is our Science Scrapbook-ing week. We aim to neaten all our Science students’ notes before SA2, so there is ample time for them to do revision. This is also the time to clear any backlog work done by our students.

While waiting for JG to complete her note taking, JH used the time to complete her DIY Sun Catcher. We love her interpretation of her artwork and of course, not forgetting to ask questions relating to Science, and how a Sun Catcher helps her learn about light.

Over to JG side, her note taking skills are top-notch. We love how she thinks creatively and decorates the main topics for each notes. We enjoyed her eye-candy scrapbook-ing ideas!

P5 Science/25 July 2018/Wednesday – science scrapping

It is Science Scrapbook-ing time for the whole week! Our aim is to help our students collate and collect all their notes into one place, where they can retrieve any information and revise at any time. We believe that our system allows learning to take place more effectively for our students.

Their finally completed compiled notes neatly stashed and nice collated. That is how we call proper filing!

If you like to know how to get a copy of our Science Scrapbook, drop us a message!

K2 English/25 July 2018/Wednesday

Although the craft was similar to our P1-P2 English class, the delivery of the lesson was different. We focus more on the procedural text type writing for our K2 class. This helps them to develop a proper structure and foundation for writing.

Slide1

We went through the steps and got them to write down, then to decorate their crafts.

The girls coloured and pasted on their crafts, and we used the chance to teach them colours and textures along the way.

Their completed work! With imagination and creativity, our girls did a fantastic job.

Slide7

We break down the lesson into bite sized information for our K2 girls to understand, before merging them all into small paragraphs. Our aim is to give them space to grow in terms of getting used to writing in longer sentences, to help our K2 students to transit into Primary One seamlessly.

Slide10

Our girls tried out their fruit of labour – spinning their wheels!

P1-P2 English/24 July 2018/Tuesday

It was a wheelin’ craft time for the lesson! Spinning wheel craft and story writing. We demonstrated how the wheel works and set the stage for them to start their work.

After their procedural writing, they got on to complete their craft.

After adding splashes of colours to their plain wooden wheels, we helped them string the craft parts together.

Slide6

We helped them to pack into their plastic wrap to take back. Looks pretty and ready for sale, aren’t they?

Watch their spinning wheels in action!

P4 Science/24 July 2018/Monday – light

We started using our Science Scrapbook for our Science classes, for them to jot down notes and slot them neatly in the designated folders and topics. Classifying notes is the first step to consolidate all notes for easy revision.

F was one of our first batch of students to have used the book and look how she utilized fully! It was much easier to have all her notes at one place, she said.

The topic she is learning is on Light and her visuals were bright and clear. We also continued finishing up her DIY Sun Catcher from the previous lesson. So BLING BLING! We also took the chance to recap how light reflects off shiny objects and surfaces, so she could THINK & LINK concepts.

P6 Science/20 July 2018/Friday – electricity

We had a new student and as the parents have briefed us, WJ is indeed a smart boy. His parents were concerned over his great dip in marks. We run pre assessments and we did

one on him. He has the head knowledge (contents), which makes things easier for us, and we covered as much as we could over the 2h lesson.

Slide2

We used our teaching aids and tested WJ on some PSLE Science OEQs commonly seen in practice papers, the reverse way. As WJ was tinkering with the electric circuit, we asked him questions, like what would the questions be each time he set up a different circuit.

Slide1

The questions he came up with were very close to what were seen in PSLE Science OEQs type, and we just helped him rephrase accordingly. In this way, we are also using our THINK & LINK method to help our students bridge the gap between learning and answering questions.

Slide3

WJ’s parents feedback that WJ is much more confident in handling such questions and is able to THINK & LINK back concepts and apply them accordingly.
